FDA approves fast-acting Afrezza, an inhaled insulin used in the treatment of diabetes.

SILVER SPRING, Md., June 29 (UPI) —The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday announced the approval of Afrezza, an inhaled insulin used in the treatment of diabetes.

The rapid-acting medicine can be used at the beginning of a meal or within 20 minutes after the start of a meal to control glycemic levels in adults with diabetes.

“Afrezza is a new treatment option for patients with diabetes requiring mealtime insulin,” said Dr. Jean-Marc Guettier, director of the Division of Metabolism and Endocrinology Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Today’s approval broadens the options available for delivering mealtime insulin in the overall management of patients with diabetes who require it to control blood sugar levels.”

The drug was tested in 3,017 patients, 1,026 with type 1 diabetes and 1,991 with type 2. The FDA said Afrezza was not a substitute for long-acting insulin and must be used in combination with long-acting insulin for patients with type 1 diabetes.

It also can’t be used to treat diabetec ketoacidosis or by patients who smoke. The drug is manufactured by MannKind Corporation out of Danbury, Conn.

Some 25.8 million people in the United States have diabetes, which is about 8.3 percent of the total population.

Based on Engadget Live, a technology open house event at the Austin Music Hall on Friday night, the first company to create a virtual-reality game that also serves real-life liquor is going to make an astounding amount of money.

Hosted by Engadget, a popular blog for gadget lovers, the mini expo at first glance looked like it might be a bust. In the giant floor space of the hall, only about a dozen demonstrations were set up, some on surfaces the size of small dinner tables. But once the free event opened to the public at 7 p.m., hundreds of people occupied the space. It became clear quickly, judging from where the biggest lines formed and what got people talking and shooting photos, what people were most interested in trying.

GALLAGA: Future of tech may include virtual reality, vaporized spirits

By Omar L. Gallaga, Austin American-Statesman

High spirits: The only other line that came close to competing with Chaotic Moon’s was an Austin company that’s only been around for three months, Vapshot. Vapshot began as a weekend project for Victor Wong, the CEO and founder, who works in music hardware for artists including Prince and Maroon 5.

Vapshot is what you might call vaporware: it is literally vapor made from alcohol and dispensed in plastic bottles. Once filled, the bottles are opened with a champagne-bottle-like pop. The vapor can be sucked through a straw, giving customers the same result as doing shots at a bar, but with faster effect (about 30 seconds) and a shorter inebriation time (about 15 minutes, says Wong).

Brewbot, Vaporshot and Other Tech Gadgets at Engadget Austin Live

A big crowd turned out for Engadget Live Austin held last Friday to showcase some of the city’s latest tech products.

A customized beer brewing station controlled with a smartphone, a vaporized alcohol machine and a virtual reality Oculus Rift headset were a few of the devices on display at the Austin Music Hall.

Engadget, an online technology news site, is doing a series of live events around the country to showcase new gadgets, said Jeff Taylor with Engadget. More than 3,000 people got a ticket to attend the Austin event.

Other events will be held in Seattle, Boston, Los Angeles and New York.

The line to sample vaporized alcohol from Vapshot was among the longest at the event.

Victor Wong, co-founder of Vapshot, came up with the idea during a “boring weekend” last February. He got together with his friend and engineer, Larry Cotton, co-founder, and they created the Vapshot. They took the machine to a tradeshow in Las Vegas and sold $70,000 worth of the machines, which cost $4,000 each.

“We started shipping them last week,” Wong said.

The machine vaporizes alcohol into a bottle, which people then inhale with a straw. The Vapshot delivers alcohol into the lungs for an immediate buzz, which Wong estimates lasts only 15 minutes.

Vapshot is selling the machine to bars licensed to sell and distribute alcohol, Wong said. The machine can get 1,500 vaporized shots out of bottle of liquor, compared to about 20 shots in liquid form.

Austin, get ready… Engadget Live is coming!

We’ve heard that it’s going to be hot in Austin on June 20th. Sure, one could say that’s just a typical June day in Austin, but we’d like to think it’s because we’re coming to town. OurEngadget Live series kicks off at 7PM at the famous Austin Music Hall.

Previously, we announced that attendees can expect to see Chaotic Moon, Re3D, Charmed Labs, Techjango and Zero Motorcycles. But that can’t be all, right?

No, there’s much more. First off, have you heard about Vapshot? It’s a machine that instantly vaporizes alcohol to then serve up as a shot or a mixed drink. Though we don’t recommend combining that with something you’d smoke from a vaporizer.

TiVo, the folks behind the Roamio Pro, will give you the opportunity to see why its DVRs are far better for you than a crappy cable company-issued one. Optical Cables by Corning(the same people who probably made the glass on your phone) will show off its superiorThunderbolt and USB 3.0 cables.

You’ll also get to meet our newly minted editor-in-chief, Michael Gorman, as well as more great folks from the Engadget team. Sound good? Go get your tickets right here.

Not in Austin? Join us in Seattle, Boston or Los Angeles later this year, or in New York forEngadget Expand. If you’d like to volunteer to help us put on the show in Austin or any other event we’ve got going on, shoot us an email at volunteer[at]engadget.com for details.

Vapshot Transforms Drinks into a New State of Matter

Food Manufacturing Magazine online
Fri, 04/04/2014 – 10:39am

AUSTIN, Texas, April 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Vapshot™ is a refreshing new way to enjoy mix drinks, cocktails or shots. Vapshot is served in specially designed containers, which are pressurized and premixed with various spirits.

When served, you simply twist the cap, “pop the top” and a portion of the liquor will instantly vaporize right before your eyes. The process brings out the true flavor of the liquor, making it an aromatic and pleasant experience.

The Vapshot machine is capable of injecting a fine mist of spirits into the serving container under pressure. Self-contained and automated, it provides a liter of capacity for each of the two dispensing guns allowing for the pouring of spirits only, a Vapshot (vapor only) or a Vapshot-plus (vapor and shot). LED name plates provide product labeling and a 14-inch color LED is built-in for display of promotional videos.

Due to the efficiency of the system, up to 1,500 Vapshots can be produced from a single 750ml bottle of 80-proof alcohol.

The Vapshot machine is constructed from the highest quality materials including aluminum and stainless steel. Food and medical grade components ensure years of trouble free service.

Vapshot can be served many different ways: Vapshot (vapor only), Vapshot plus a shot of liquor, and a Vapshot mix drink.

Vapshot was designed to provide a responsible way to enjoy alcohol beverages in a new and exciting manner. A Vapshot 1-liter serving, after 1 minute, will give a breathalyzer test of less than 0.05%. Within 10 minutes the level will return to 0.00%.

Even consumption of a 1-liter Vapshot every 10 minutes is well below standards set by OSHA for intake of ethyl alcohol.

“We wanted to bring a little science to the party,” said Lary Cotten, CTO, Vapshot. “Our goal was to create a new, innovative, and responsible way to enjoy adult beverages.”

Unlike e-cigarettes, Vapshots do not contain glycol or glycerine. There is no introduction of any additional chemicals or compounds when consuming a Vapshot

Vapshot’s vaporization process does not require any heat, which can produce vapors that may cause a burning sensation when consumed. In fact, Vapshot can be served at room temperature or even chilled. Other vaporization products use heat or a chemical reaction to vaporize the alcohol, thereby introducing factors that may be a negative to health and safety. Vapshot is not in that same category of products.

Designed to be offered as single serving portions, Vapshot is not a system for continual and constant delivery of vapors.
